Part 2 Chapter 3 Page 1 1968John Bonawitz, (12/30/1801-9/10/1885) Born and died at Berrysburg. m. 1st Salome (Sallie) Schoffstall, (6/11/1813-9/19/1841) " m. 2nd Catherine Harman, widow of John Messner (12/28/1805-4/11/1870) John purchased the homestead from his father in 1834 which, with other land he bought, adjoined land of his brother Jonas. See an account of the family in the "Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County". John farmed the homestead then willed it to his son Jonathan. The homestead lay two miles north of Berrysburg. 1. Catherine Bonawitz These three are mentioned in the 2. Mary Bonawitz Encyclopedia as being among the five 3. Henry Bonawitz children born to John and Salome. No further record of them has been found and it is believed that all three of them died young. 4. Jonathan Bonawitz, (9/27/1833-12/13/1913) Buried at Berrysburg. m. Margaret Rutter, in August 1861 (9/ /1840-5/27/1911) " Jonathan farmed the homestead until he retired. He was a Lutheran. At times he was a school director, tax collector, assessor, and supervisor of roads. He was also church organist and choir leader. Margaret was a daughter of Henry Rutter of Halifax County. 1. Mary Bonawitz, (5/ /1862- died about 1945) m. Peter E. Stine, in 1885 (9/23/1861 See the Encyclopedia for their family. 2. Charles E. Bonawitz, (1/25/1864-5/1/1914) Buried in the "Hill" Cemetery. Charles never married. He farmed the homestead. 3. William Edwin Bonawitz, M. D. (1/30/1866-10/2/1911) Hill Cem. m. 1st Anna M. Beshier, March 5, 1890 (9/5/1866-5/7/1909) " m. 2nd Edwin practised at Fisherville. Edwin had no children. See the Encyclopedia. 4. Kathryne Bonawitz, ( / /1874- died about 1960) m. Rev. Harry B. Ernest, February 17, 1904. Ro children. 5. Sarah Frances Bonawitz, ( / /1875-5/7/1955) m. Charles F. Deibler, November 18, 1899. Lived Elizabethville. 5. Sarah Bonawitz, (8/16/1835-10/17/1869) Both buried Stone Valley m. Jacob Lenker, (3/31/1833-10/11/1869) Cem, Northumberland Co. Their children were Mary Agnes, John, and Elizabeth. The male lineage died out in this branch of the family.
