Part 2 Chapter 2 Page 1 March 1969Michael Bonewitz (3/11/1799-4/25/1883) Buried Grove Cem near Bolivar m. Catharine, (1800-1885) No record of Michael's marriage has been found. He was in Dauphin County in 1830, then moved to a farm 5 miles south of Bolivar, Ohio by 1840. There was a Bonawitz School there once. Michael did not leave a will. Thomas Krantz of Strasburg got together information from older folks about the family. A letter written by the son John in 1884 to Michael Bonawitt at Risingsun, Ohio, was most helpful. The name was spelled Bonewitz on Michael's grave stone, and John used the spelling Bonewitz. 1. A daughter married a Heid, lived in Missouri in 1884. 2. Elizabeth Bonewitz, (1824- still living in 1884 m. John Fritz. They were in Dover Township in 1850. There were three boys and three girls. 3. Sarah Bonewitz, (1824- still living in 1884 m. Peter Shriver. They were living in Bolivar in 1850. It is understood that she lived in Canton later. 4. John Bonewitz, (1825-1904) Buried at Kennewick, Washington. m. Mary Sechrist, May 7, 1848 (1830-1887) Bur. Kaelber Cem, Ind. They farmed near Michael until after 1860. In 1865 they were farming in Clay Co., Indiana about 12 miles east of Terre Haute. The mother was living with them in 1884. There were ten children, of whom six were living in 1884. 1. John Zacariah Bonewitz, (5/3/1849-6/9/1930) m. Margaret Ann Nicoson, December 30, 1869 (1851-1925) In 1880, they were farming near Myrtle Point in Coos County, Oregon. See following pages for their descendants. 2. Cathrine Ann Bonewitz, (12/28/1850-3/2/1940) m. David Deardorff. They moved to Kennewick, Washington. 3. Margaret Elizabeth Bonewitz, (1/5/1853-9/18/1853) 4. Mary Jane Bonewitz, (1/14/1855- m. E.G. Payne. They moved to Kennewick, Washington. 5. Franklin Wesley Bonewitz, (1858-1861) 6. Martha Hulda Bonewitz, (5/23/1865-3/25/1928) m. Clifford W. Metz, Oct. 2, 1895. They farmed atWeston, Ore. 7. Phoebe Ellen Bonewitz, (6/6/1868-7/31/1960) m. M.A.Bryson, then Joseph Blomgren, farmed at Weston, Ore. 8. Michael L. Bonewitz, (5/5/1872-1/10/1932) m. in 1898, died at Blackfoot, Idaho. No known children.
